Pragmata vs Resident Evil Requiem: Which Capcom Hit Wins?

Published April 18, 2026 · 6 min read · By The Manual

Capcom is having one of those years. In 2026 alone they've shipped Resident Evil Requiem (the fastest-selling RE in series history) and Pragmata (a brand-new IP that critics are calling a Game of the Year contender). Both are tight ~10-12 hour single-player games. Both score in the high 80s on Metacritic. Both are $69.99.

Here's how to choose if you can only buy one.

DEPENDS

Both are easy BUYs. The choice is about taste, not quality. Pragmata is the more inventive game — a brand-new IP with a hacking-meets-shooting hook nobody else is doing. Resident Evil Requiem is the more polished entry — a confident dual-protagonist horror that's already moved 6 million units. If you want originality, Pragmata. If you want refinement, Requiem.

What Each Game Is

Pragmata

Pragmata is Capcom's first brand-new IP in eight years — a single-player sci-fi shooter with a uniquely inventive hook. You play Hugh, an astronaut, alongside Diana, an android girl with hacking abilities. Every fight is a third-person shooter and a real-time hacking puzzle simultaneously. You aim with Hugh while Diana solves a grid-based hack to crack enemy armor. Reviewers consistently call it the most novel combat system of 2026.

RE Requiem

Resident Evil Requiem is the ninth mainline RE and the first non-remake mainline entry to return to classic survival horror style. The game alternates between Grace Ashcroft (FBI analyst, vulnerable, RE7-style horror) and series veteran Leon S. Kennedy (full RE4-Remake-style action with merchant system). It's already moved 6 million units — the fastest in series history. Capcom's polish is on full display.

How to Decide

PICK PRAGMATA IF...

  • You want something genuinely new — no franchise baggage
  • You appreciate combat systems with cognitive hooks
  • You're sick of survival horror and want sci-fi action instead
  • You like supporting bold AAA single-player swings
  • Brand-new IPs at full price feel risky to you (this one's safe)

PICK RE REQUIEM IF...

  • You're a Resident Evil fan in any capacity
  • You want survival horror specifically
  • You like Leon S. Kennedy and want him in action mode again
  • You prefer franchise familiarity to brand-new IP
  • Body horror and zombies are your thing

The Bottom Line

There's no wrong answer here. Both games are critical and commercial successes. The honest tiebreaker is genre preference. If you load up your PS5/Xbox and ask 'do I want sci-fi action or survival horror right now?' — that's your answer.

If you have $140 to spend: buy both. They scratch completely different itches and Capcom is rewarding the kind of single-player AAA development we want more of by funding both.
