October 2026 Games: What's Worth Buying

The densest month of the year, and the one where the November 19 deadline starts doing real damage to what you can realistically finish.

DEPENDS
DEPENDS — early October is buyable, late October is not. Anything after the 20th is competing for three weeks of your attention against an 80-hour game.

October 2026 is the densest release month of the year, and it is split cleanly in half by a practical problem: games released in the first week leave you seven weeks before Grand Theft Auto VI, and games released in the last week leave you three.

The first-week window

Ace Combat 8 on October 2 and Gears of War: E-Day on October 6 are the two purchases that make sense this month, and for the same reason: both are finishable. Ace Combat campaigns run roughly 10 to 15 hours. A Gears campaign is comparable. Both leave you clear before November 19.

Gears is the better value of the two because it is on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass from launch day, which effectively reduces it to the cost of a subscription month — the full reasoning is in Game Pass or buy.

The late-October problem, stated plainly: Call of Duty on the 23rd and Phantom Blade Zero on the 29th both need sustained time to be worth their price. Neither will get it. Both will be cheaper in spring, when you will actually have room for them, and publishers who launched into GTA 6's shadow discount faster than usual afterwards.

The exception: PC players

Grand Theft Auto VI has no PC version and no announced release date. If PC is your only platform, none of the timing logic on this page applies to you — your November is completely clear, and late-October releases are perfectly reasonable purchases.

That is a rare situation where the platform disadvantage becomes an advantage. See why there is still no PC date.

Budget discipline

There are five notable releases in this month and a $79.99 purchase four weeks after it. Buying three of these plus Grand Theft Auto VI is a substantial amount of money for a set of games you will mostly not finish.

What works

  • Buy at most one October release, ideally in the first week
  • Use Game Pass for Gears rather than buying it
  • Let late-October releases wait for spring pricing
  • Keep budget available for console storage before November — see the storage guide

What doesn't

  • Do not buy Call of Duty unless it is genuinely your social game
  • Do not start a long action game three weeks before an 80-hour release
  • Do not assume you will return to an abandoned October game in December
  • None of these have been reviewed at time of writing

Last month's picture is in September 2026 games worth buying, and the whole season is in the fall 2026 hub.

The verdict

October splits in half. The first week is buyable and finishable; the last week is a trap for anyone buying Grand Theft Auto VI in November.

DEPENDS — Ace Combat 8 if you want to own something, Gears of War: E-Day on Game Pass if you want value. Let the rest wait until spring.
