Gears of War: E-Day launches October 6, 2026 and is available day one on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. It is also sold outright in Standard and Premium editions, with Premium buyers getting up to five days of early access from October 1.
This is one of the cleanest subscription-versus-ownership decisions of the year, because the game is available both ways from the same moment.
The question that decides it
Will you still be playing this in six months?
If the answer is no — you want the campaign, you will finish it, you will move on — then subscribing is straightforwardly correct. A month of Game Pass Ultimate is a fraction of a full-price game, and the campaign is very likely completable inside it.
If the answer is yes — you play Gears multiplayer, you have played Horde for years, Versus is a habit rather than a mode — then ownership wins eventually, because subscription costs accumulate and a purchase does not.
When subscribing wins
- You want the campaign and not much else
- You already subscribe, in which case there is no decision to make at all
- You want to try it without committing — a campaign you bounce off costs you nothing extra
- You play across Xbox and PC, since Play Anywhere and PC Game Pass both cover you
- You have several other Game Pass games queued, which spreads the subscription cost across them
When buying wins
- You are a long-term Gears multiplayer player. Horde and Versus are the modes people keep returning to for years
- You do not otherwise use Game Pass, so the subscription has no other value to you
- You want the Premium Edition's five-day early access from October 1
- You want permanent access regardless of whether a title leaves the service later
That last point is the strongest ownership argument in general and the weakest one here specifically, since first-party Microsoft titles are unlikely to leave Game Pass.
Which edition, if you are buying
| Edition | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Standard | The correct buy for almost everyone who is buying. The full game |
| Premium | Adds up to five days of early access from October 1. Worth it only if playing before the discourse matters to you |
| Collector's | Physical extras. A collectibles decision, not a gaming one — see are collector's editions worth it |
The wider subscription picture
This release is a good illustration of why the subscription question is genuinely close in 2026 rather than obvious in either direction. Our full break-even analysis across Game Pass, PS Plus and Nintendo Switch Online is in Game Pass vs buying games in 2026.
One thing no subscription covers this autumn: Grand Theft Auto VI. That is a $79.99 purchase on both platforms with no subscription route, which is worth building into your winter budget rather than discovering in November.
