Is GTA 5 Still Worth Buying in 2026?

Grand Theft Auto V launched in September 2013. It's now 2026 — nearly 13 years later — and it has sold 230 million copies, making it one of the best-selling entertainment products in human history. With GTA 6 arriving November 19, is GTA 5 still worth your money?

THE SINGLE-PLAYER

The campaign is a masterpiece that hasn't aged. Three playable protagonists — Michael, Franklin, and Trevor — each with distinct personalities, storylines, and gameplay styles. The mission variety is unmatched: heists, car chases, flight sequences, stealth operations, and moments of genuine storytelling brilliance. At 30+ hours, it's one of the most complete single-player experiences in gaming.

On PC at high settings, the game still looks remarkable. The lighting, the water, the density of Los Santos — it holds up against many 2024 and 2025 releases. The modding community has kept the game visually fresh for over a decade.

GTA ONLINE

GTA Online is still active and still receiving updates in 2026, though the frequency has slowed as Rockstar shifts focus to GTA 6. The economy is inflated, the grind is real, and new players face a steep curve. But with friends, there's still nothing quite like causing chaos in Los Santos together. Expect GTA Online to wind down significantly after GTA 6 launches.

SHOULD YOU WAIT FOR GTA 6 INSTEAD?

GTA 6 doesn't release until November 19, 2026 — and it's PS5/Xbox only. No PC date announced (likely 2028). If you're a PC player, GTA 5 is your only option for the foreseeable future. Even if you're on console, GTA 5 at $10–15 during the Steam Summer Sale is five months of entertainment before GTA 6 arrives.

PROS

96 Metacritic — one of the highest-rated games ever
30+ hour campaign that still holds up
Regularly drops to $10-15 during Steam sales
Massive modding community on PC
GTA Online still active with years of free content

CONS

13 years old — some mechanics feel dated
GTA Online grind is brutal for new players
GTA 6 arrives in November, making this feel temporary
PS3/360 versions should be avoided entirely

📌 THE BOTTOM LINE

GTA 5 is still a BUY in 2026 — but only at a sale price. At $10–15 during the Steam Summer Sale, the single-player campaign alone is worth it. Don't pay full price with GTA 6 five months away. And if you're buying to prep for GTA 6's Vice City? Playing GTA 5 first will only make the sequel hit harder.
