Monster Hunter Wilds vs Crimson Desert: Which Should You Buy?
Two of 2026's biggest action RPGs with massive worlds to explore. Monster Hunter Wilds brings Capcom's signature loop of hunt-craft-upgrade, while Crimson Desert offers Pearl Abyss's open-world combat spectacle. Both demand dozens of hours — but they scratch very different itches.
THE CORE LOOP
Monster Hunter Wilds is the ultimate "one more hunt" game. Track a monster, learn its patterns, take it down, carve materials, craft better gear, repeat with bigger monsters. The loop is addictive because every hunt feels different, and the weapon variety (14 weapon types) means you can completely change your playstyle without starting over.
Crimson Desert is exploration-first. The loop is closer to Breath of the Wild: see something interesting on the horizon, go there, fight whatever you find, discover secrets. There's less structured progression and more emergent discovery.
MULTIPLAYER
Wilds shines in co-op. Hunting with friends is the core experience, and the seamless drop-in multiplayer makes it effortless. Crimson Desert is primarily a single-player experience with limited online features.
VERDICT
📌 THE BOTTOM LINE
Buy Monster Hunter Wilds if you want a tighter, more rewarding gameplay loop with incredible co-op. Buy Crimson Desert if you want a vast, beautiful world to lose yourself in solo. Wilds is the safer bet with its 90 Metacritic and Capcom's track record. Crimson Desert is the riskier but potentially more surprising choice. If you can only pick one, Wilds.
