Two of the most acclaimed roguelikes ever made, and they couldn't be more different in philosophy. Hades 2 wraps its razor-sharp combat in Greek mythology and a story that actually makes you want to die so you can unlock the next conversation. Dead Cells strips everything down to pure combat mastery — no story to speak of, just a relentless gauntlet that rewards memorization and reflexes.

Both are universally loved. Both will consume hundreds of hours. But which one should you buy first? That depends entirely on what you want out of a roguelike.

HEAD-TO-HEAD BREAKDOWN

CATEGORY HADES 2 DEAD CELLS
Combat= TIE Isometric, weapon-based with ability combos. Diverse builds using Boons from gods. More strategic, gives you breathing room. 2D side-scroller, brutally fast. Weapons, traps, skills combined in real-time. Zero breathing room — aggression rewarded via kill multiplier.

DEAD CELLS

PROS

  • Pure combat mastery — nothing gets in the way
  • Incredible value with years of DLC content
  • Fastest-feeling roguelike combat ever made
  • Runs are perfectly paced at 30-45 minutes

CONS

  • Almost zero narrative — not for story lovers
  • Permadeath with minimal carryover is brutal
  • Art style is good but not distinctive
⟐ THE VERDICT: IT DEPENDS
Buy Hades 2 if you want story, characters, and a reason to care beyond the gameplay loop. Buy Dead Cells if you want pure, undiluted combat mastery and don't need a plot justification to keep running. Both are top-tier — you can't go wrong, but you'll have very different experiences.
