Under $100 buys a genuinely good wireless headset, a premium controller, a substantial storage upgrade, a new release, or a year of a subscription. All of those are real gifts. The problem is that all of them are also things the recipient may already have solved.
The strong options
- A wireless headset. This is the price band where wireless stops involving painful compromises. Comfort and microphone quality are what to prioritise — details in the headset guide and our picks.
- A premium or first-party controller. A first-party pad or a well-built third-party one with Hall effect sticks sits comfortably here — controller guide.
- A substantial storage upgrade. A 1TB console drive is the most useful thing many people will receive this year and the least likely thing they bought themselves — storage guide.
- A current release. A new game plus something small is a well-balanced gift.
- A good gaming mouse, if they play on PC — our picks are in the best gaming mice of 2026.
- A mechanical keyboard. This band now includes Hall effect switches, which is a real upgrade rather than a marketing one — see budget Hall effect keyboards.
How to avoid guessing wrong
- Ask what they are annoyed by. A drifting stick, a full console, a headset that hurts. People will tell you if the question is specific.
- Look at what is worn out rather than what is missing. Replacing something failing is more welcome than adding something new.
- Buy for the platform they actually use most, not the one they own most of.
- When in doubt, storage. It cannot be duplicated and it is never unwelcome.
- When still in doubt, a gift card. At this price it is a legitimate choice, not a cop-out.
What not to buy in this band
What works
- Storage — impossible to duplicate, always useful
- A replacement for something they have complained about
- A current release they have mentioned wanting
- Audio, if you know they are still using TV speakers
What doesn't
- Gaming chairs — the wrong chair is worse than no chair, and this tier buys a bad one
- Genre-specific peripherals unless you know they play that genre
- VR, unless they have tried it and want it — why
- Anything requiring them to change how their setup works
Timing
Black Friday is November 27 and Cyber Monday November 30. In that week this tier effectively becomes the under-$150 tier, particularly for headsets, storage and peripherals. If you can buy gifts early, that week is where the money goes furthest — the full guide.
