Refurbished vs. used
These two words mean very different things for a gift buyer:
| Certified refurbished | Used / pre-owned | |
|---|---|---|
| Inspected and tested | Yes, by the maker or a certified refurbisher | Depends on the seller |
| Warranty | Yes, length varies by seller | Usually none. Manufacturer warranties generally cover only the original buyer. |
| Returns | Usually a fixed window | Varies, often short |
| Price | Below new | Lowest |
For a gift, especially for a child, refurbished is usually worth the extra money. A dead console on Christmas morning with no warranty is a bad outcome.
Where to buy
| Where | What you get |
|---|---|
| Nintendo (official) | Authentic Nintendo Refurbished Switch models with a 1-year limited warranty. We couldn't find an official refurbished Switch 2 when we checked. |
| PlayStation Direct | Certified Refurbished PS5 consoles with a 1-year warranty and 30-day free returns. Listings showed as unavailable when we checked, so stock comes and goes. |
| Microsoft Store | Certified Refurbished Xbox Series X and Series S with a 90-day warranty. |
| eBay Refurbished | Graded listings: Certified comes with a 2-year warranty, while Excellent, Very Good and Good come with 1 year. Free 30-day returns. Video game consoles are eligible. |
| GameStop pre-owned | Full refund within 7 days. Defective items can be exchanged within 15 days, or 30 days for Pro members. |
| Marketplace and local sales | The cheapest, with the least protection. Meet in person and test it before paying. |
Browsing on eBay? Start with refurbished listings: refurbished PS5, refurbished Xbox Series X, refurbished Switch OLED. To judge a price, compare it with recently sold listings, which our used games guide explains how to find.
The four big risks
1. A banned console
Nintendo blocks consoles from online services when it detects piracy devices, and buyers have reported receiving used Switch 2 consoles that were already banned. A banned Switch 2 can't use the eShop, download updates or DLC, or use Game-Key Cards, which many new games rely on. That makes it nearly useless as a gift. One reported buyer was also banned after playing second-hand cartridges, and only got reinstated after showing proof of purchase.
The check: Before paying, or immediately on receipt within the return window, connect it to the internet and open the eShop or try an online game. If it shows an error, return it.
2. Still tied to the last owner
Consoles link to accounts. If the seller didn't remove theirs properly, you may hit problems with digital games or with setting it up as the new owner's main console. The official removal steps are:
- Nintendo: deregister the console as the seller's primary (pass-enabled) console, then initialize it while online. If it's offline during the reset, it can stay registered to the old account.
- PlayStation: turn off Console Sharing and Offline Play, then reset the console.
- Xbox: reset to factory defaults, then remove the console from the seller's Microsoft account devices page.
The check: Ask the seller to confirm they've done this. If buying in person, ask them to do it in front of you.
3. Controller drift
Analog sticks wear over time and can start "drifting," moving on their own. It's a well-known problem on Joy-Con and has been reported on PS5 DualSense controllers too. Used controllers are where this shows up.
The check: Test each stick in a menu or the console's calibration screen. If it drifts, budget for a new controller. A fresh one is a good add-on gift anyway. See gifts to go with a new console.
4. No warranty
Nintendo's 12-month warranty and Sony's 1-year PS5 warranty cover the original purchaser with proof of purchase, and Microsoft says used devices aren't covered. Assume a used console has no manufacturer warranty.
The FTC warns that unusually low prices are a sign of a scam, and that anyone demanding payment by gift card, wire transfer, payment app or crypto is a scammer. Pay through the platform or by credit card so you can dispute the charge. eBay's Money Back Guarantee doesn't cover payments made outside eBay.
The pre-purchase checklist
- It's the exact model you need. See how to tell them apart.
- It powers on, reaches the home screen and connects to the internet.
- Online features work: eShop, PlayStation Store or Xbox Store opens without an error.
- The seller's account has been removed and the console reset.
- Every controller's sticks are tested for drift.
- The disc drive works, if it has one. Try a disc.
- The power cable and HDMI cable are included.
- You're paying through the platform or by credit card, with a return window.
Once it passes, use the night-before setup checklist to get it ready. Back to the main gift guide.
Quick answers
Can a used Nintendo Switch 2 be banned?
Yes. Nintendo blocks consoles from online services if it detects piracy devices like MiG flash carts, and buyers have reported receiving used consoles that were already banned. A banned console can't use the eShop, download updates or use Game-Key Cards, so test it online before you pay or within the return window.
Does the warranty transfer if I buy a used console?
Generally not in practice. Nintendo's and Sony's warranties cover the original purchaser with proof of purchase, and Microsoft says used devices aren't covered. Certified refurbished consoles come with their own warranty instead.
Is eBay safe for buying a used console?
eBay's Money Back Guarantee covers items that don't arrive or that arrive damaged, faulty or not as described, as long as you pay through eBay. It isn't a product warranty. eBay Refurbished listings add a 1- or 2-year warranty depending on the grade.
Where can I buy an official refurbished console?
Nintendo sells refurbished original Switch models with a 1-year limited warranty, Microsoft sells certified refurbished Xbox Series X and S with a 90-day warranty, and PlayStation Direct lists certified refurbished PS5 consoles with a 1-year warranty, though availability varies.
