If someone else is giving the console, check with them before buying add-ons. They may have bought a bundle that already includes a game, or picked a model with no disc drive. The add-on has to match the exact model. Our console identification guide shows the differences.
1. A second controller
Every console comes with one controller. The moment a sibling, parent or friend wants to join in, a second one becomes essential. It's the add-on most likely to be used every single day.
For PlayStation 5
The official DualSense controller. It's the one that supports all of the PS5's rumble and trigger features. It works on PS5 and PS5 Pro.
See DualSense controllersFor Xbox Series X|S
The official Xbox Wireless Controller. It usually runs on AA batteries, so a rechargeable battery pack is a nice extra.
See Xbox controllersFor Nintendo Switch 2
A second set of Joy-Con 2 controllers, or the Switch 2 Pro Controller for longer sessions. Make sure it says Switch 2, since original Switch Joy-Con don't attach to a Switch 2.

2. A first game
A console with nothing to play is a disappointing morning. Some bundles include a game, so check the box first. Nintendo's US Switch 2 bundles, for example, include the game as a download plus three months of Nintendo Switch Online.
If there's no game included, pick one by age using our guides for ages 3–5, 6–8, 9–12 or teens. For adults, our best Switch 2 games list and the main site's verdicts are good starting points.
3. Storage
Modern games are big, and built-in storage fills up fast. For anyone who'll play several large games, extra storage prevents the "delete something first" problem. Each console takes a specific kind:
| Console | What it takes | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 / PS5 Pro | An internal M.2 SSD | Installing it involves opening a panel and a small screw. It's easy, but not something to wrap and hope for the best. |
| Xbox Series X|S | An official Storage Expansion Card that plugs into the back | Ordinary USB drives can store games but can't play current-generation Xbox games from them. |
| Switch 2 | A microSD Express card | Regular microSD cards won't work for games on Switch 2. |
Storage is one of the most reliable Black Friday discounts. See our console storage guide for specific picks, or browse microSD Express cards.
4. A membership
For most paid games, playing online with friends requires the console's membership: PlayStation Plus, Xbox Game Pass or Nintendo Switch Online. Higher tiers add a library of games to download, which is a great way to fill a brand-new console. Our gift card and membership guide lists the current official prices.
5. Small extras worth it
- A case and screen protector for Switch 2. It's a portable console with a large screen, and it will get carried around. Our protection guide explains what actually prevents damage.
- A rechargeable battery pack for Xbox controllers, so you're not buying AA batteries every few weeks.
- The PS5 disc drive, if they have a slim-generation PS5 Digital Edition or a PS5 Pro and want to play discs, including any games they already own on disc. Check the model number first.
- A wired headset for anyone who'll chat with friends online. See headset vs. mic.
What to skip
- Accessory "starter bundles" full of cheap cables, stands and grips. The useful parts are usually already in the console box.
- Gaming chairs. They're a personal fit and a poor surprise gift.
- Deluxe editions of the first game. The standard edition is the same game. See when an upgrade is worth it.
- Anything for the wrong model. Original Switch accessories and Switch 2 accessories aren't always interchangeable.

Quick answers
What should I buy with a new console?
A second controller first, especially if more than one person will play. Then a first game if one isn't included, and extra storage for anyone who'll play large games.
Does the Switch 2 need a special memory card?
Yes. Games and save data on Switch 2 need a microSD Express card. Regular microSD cards can only receive copied screenshots and videos.
Do Switch 2 bundles include the game?
Nintendo's Switch 2 bundles include the game as a download plus three months of Nintendo Switch Online, according to Nintendo's US store listings. Check the exact bundle you're buying.
Can a PS5 Digital Edition play discs?
Not on its own. Sony sells an add-on disc drive separately for the slim-generation PS5 Digital Edition and the PS5 Pro. It needs an internet connection once to pair. Check the console's model number against Sony's compatibility list first.
