Pokémon Gold vs Silver vs Crystal: Which Gen 2 Version Wins?

Widely considered the series' first truly ambitious sequel generation — and Crystal quietly improved on both originals.

Version Exclusives

Gold and Silver split legendary beasts (Ho-Oh vs Lugia) and a handful of other species down the middle, continuing the Gen 1 formula of encouraging trading between versions. Crystal, released about a year later, became the first game in the series to feature an animated overworld sprite for the player's Pokémon and let players choose a female protagonist for the first time — both firsts for the franchise.

What Crystal Adds

Beyond the animation and protagonist choice, Crystal included the Battle Tower (the series' first postgame competitive battling facility) and a short exclusive story thread involving the Suicune, giving it a more defined identity than simply "Gold and Silver combined."

Which to Buy in 2026

Crystal is the more complete single-cartridge purchase and is generally the recommended starting point if you only want one. That said, Gold and Silver carry more first-release nostalgia for players who owned them originally, and prices across all three versions tend to move together on the secondhand market rather than Crystal commanding a huge premium, so let nostalgia be the tiebreaker if it matters to you.
