Last-Minute Video Game Gifts That Don't Look Last-Minute

Video games are one of the best last-minute gift categories, because so much of it is digital. Here's what you can still give when shipping is no longer an option, and how to make it feel planned.

2026 shipping deadlines

If you still want something physical to arrive by mail, these are USPS's officially recommended dates for the lower 48 states for Christmas 2026:

USPS serviceSend by
Ground Advantage and First-Class MailDecember 17
Priority MailDecember 18
Priority Mail ExpressDecember 19

Online retailers set their own order cutoffs, which hadn't been announced when we checked in late October. Watch for the "arrives by" date at checkout. Past those dates, switch to the options below.

Digital gifts that arrive in minutes

An emailed gift card

Major retailers sell digital PlayStation Store, Xbox, Nintendo eShop and Steam cards delivered by email. Codes usually arrive quickly, though some retailers say it can occasionally take longer if the order is reviewed. Match the platform and their account's country. Steam also lets you send wallet funds straight to a friend's account.

A specific game, sent directly

On Steam, you can gift a game to a friend and schedule it for Christmas morning, or, since July 2026, send it to an email address. On Xbox, you can gift many games to an Xbox friend or an email address. PlayStation and Nintendo don't offer this. Our digital gifting guide walks through each.

A membership code

Nintendo Switch Online, PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass are all sold as digital codes. Walmart, for example, sells the Nintendo Switch Online Family + Expansion Pack membership as a digital code. A family membership must be bought by someone 18 or older. See which membership to give.

Avoid the "deal" sites

Last-minute shoppers are the main target for too-good-to-be-true listings. The FTC warns that unusually low prices are a sign of a scam. Buy codes from major retailers or the platform itself, and pay by credit card so you can dispute the charge.

Buy online, pick up today

If you want something to unwrap, order online for in-store pickup. Target's Order Pickup and Drive Up and Walmart's pickup let you collect the same day, often without going inside. A controller, a game or a gift card from the shelf works.

Quick answers

What's the latest I can ship a gift by USPS for Christmas 2026?

USPS's recommended 2026 dates for the lower 48 states are December 17 for Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail, December 18 for Priority Mail and December 19 for Priority Mail Express. Retailers set their own cutoffs, so check at checkout.

How fast do digital gift card codes arrive?

Usually quickly, but not always instantly. Best Buy says its digital PlayStation Store card code is available shortly after purchase. Walmart says its emailed codes usually arrive within an hour but can take up to 48 hours if the order needs review. Don't leave it to the final hour.

Can I email someone a Steam game?

Since a July 2026 update, Steam lets you gift a game to an email address. The person needs a Steam account in the same country, and gifts not accepted within 30 days are refunded. Gifts to Steam friends can also be scheduled for a specific date.
