Fallout 76 launched as a punchline. No NPCs. Game-breaking bugs. Exploits everywhere. The canvas bag fiasco. The Nuka-Cola rum debacle. It was Bethesda at its absolute worst. The 52 Metacritic score was devastating for one of gaming's most beloved franchises.

Seven years later, Fallout 76 is... actually kind of good? The Wastelanders update added NPCs and dialogue. Steel Dawn brought the Brotherhood of Steel. Expeditions took you to new maps. The Fallout TV show sent millions of new players flooding in. It's not the Fallout game anyone wanted, but it's become the Fallout game a lot of people enjoy.

WHAT'S STILL NOT GREAT

WHO SHOULD BUY THIS NOW?

If you want multiplayer Fallout: There's nothing else like it. Exploring the wasteland with friends, building camps, and running events together is genuinely fun. The community is one of the friendliest in online gaming.

If you want classic Fallout: Play Fallout 4 or New Vegas instead. 76 is a different experience — it's a live-service game with Fallout's aesthetic, not a traditional single-player RPG. Adjust expectations accordingly.

⟐ VERDICT IN 2026: DEPENDS
Fallout 76 in 2026 is a genuinely enjoyable multiplayer Fallout experience — but it's still not the single-player RPG fans wanted. At $8 on sale or free on Game Pass, it's worth trying. The Wastelanders update and TV show boost have given it new life. Just don't expect Fallout: New Vegas quality writing or world-building.
