Every site on the internet spent the last week telling you what was in the Extended Look. This is the only question we care about: does it change the buying verdict.
It does not. It confirms it. Here is the reasoning.
The case for BUY
- It runs. Twenty-six minutes of in-game footage captured on a base PlayStation 5, not a Pro, not a PC, not a target render. For a project this long in development, that is the single most important thing that happened.
- The systems are additive. Six-star wanted with information-based pursuit. A persistent Criminal Profile. De-escalation dialogue. Coordinated dual-protagonist play. Nothing shown suggests scope was cut to make the date.
- No microtransactions in single-player. $79.99 is the total. In 2026 that is a materially better deal than a $69.99 game with a store attached.
- Roughly 80 hours in a map three times Red Dead 2's. The cost-per-hour is close to unbeatable at this price point.
- The date held through a serious leak. Rockstar reaffirmed November 19 while dealing with a build leak and legal action. Studios that are about to slip do not do that.
The case for WAIT
There is one, and it is not the one most people give.
- You have a large backlog and limited hours. An 80-hour game will erase your winter. If you have four games you actually want to finish, buying this in November guarantees you finish none of them. Waiting until spring costs you nothing except spoilers.
- You are a PC player. There is no PC date. Buying a console purely for this is a real decision with real money attached — covered in why there is still no PC date and which console to buy.
- You mainly play GTA for multiplayer. The November release is a single-player experience. If GTA Online is the reason you play, there is nothing here for you yet.
- Your console is nearly full and you have not budgeted for storage. This is a solvable problem, but it is a cost, and it is the one people discover too late.
Which edition
| Edition | Price | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | $79.99 | The correct buy for almost everyone. The complete game, no content withheld |
| Ultimate | $99.99 | Premium vehicles, personalised weapons, apparel and tattoos, plus a couple of exclusive shops. Cosmetic. Buy only if that specifically appeals |
| Physical | Same prices | A download code in a box, not a disc. No resale value, no offline install advantage. Buy it as a gift or a shelf object, not as a physical copy |
The detailed breakdown is in Standard vs Ultimate, and the physical situation is unpacked in the code-in-a-box explainer.
The timing
There is no scarcity. Digital cannot sell out and the physical release is a code, so the only deadline that exists is November 20 for the Vintage Vice City Pack — which is included for anyone who buys before then, pre-order or not.
That means the optimal move is unglamorous: buy whenever you like before November 20, and spend the intervening weeks sorting console storage and clearing whatever you actually want to finish first. Our run-up plan and what not to buy both exist for that.
The unknowns that remain
What works
- Gameplay verified on hardware people own
- Monetisation confirmed clean for single-player
- Length and scale confirmed by the developer
- Release date stable under pressure
What doesn't
- Install size unpublished — do not trust any specific number you read
- PS5 Pro Enhanced undefined
- No PC date
- Story quality unknowable from curated footage; Rockstar's writing has always divided people
