FRANCHISE VS FRANCHISE / SIM RACING ORIGINS
Gran Turismo vs Forza Motorsport: The Racing-Sim Origins
Two franchises that defined console sim-racing, born on rival platforms roughly a console generation apart.
Different Starting Points
Gran Turismo launched on PS1 and helped establish that a console racing game could take physics and car culture seriously, becoming one of the best-selling PS1 titles and a system-defining franchise for PlayStation. Forza Motorsport arrived on original Xbox years later as Microsoft's answer, building on lessons the genre had already learned and adding deeper tuning and career customization from the start.
Collecting the Originals Today
Original Gran Turismo and Gran Turismo 2 on PS1, or the mainline entries on PS2, remain relatively affordable and plentiful given how many copies were sold. Original Xbox's Forza Motorsport is somewhat less common to find in good condition simply due to Xbox's smaller install base compared to PlayStation, though it's far from rare.
Which to Buy First
If you want the franchise that arguably invented the console sim-racing template, start with an original Gran Turismo. If you're specifically building an original Xbox collection and want its flagship racing series, Forza Motorsport is the natural starting point for that console's library.
