GoldenEye 007 is the game that proved console FPS multiplayer could work, and its four-player split-screen mode is a defining N64 couch-gaming memory for an entire generation of players. The Case for Perfect Dark

Perfect Dark, built by largely the same team using a refined version of the same engine, is widely considered the more mechanically advanced game — better AI, a deeper weapon set, and multiplayer features (including bots, letting you play "multiplayer" solo) that GoldenEye never had. Many players who go back to both today find Perfect Dark holds up noticeably better as an actual game to play, not just a nostalgia piece.

If historical significance and pure nostalgia matter most, start with GoldenEye. If you want the more polished, more playable-today shooter from the same creative team, Perfect Dark is the stronger recommendation — and it requires the N64 Expansion Pak for some features, worth factoring into your purchase.
