Scope vs Pacing

FF7 is a sprawling, cinematic epic that helped introduce a generation of Western players to JRPGs, with pre-rendered backgrounds and full-motion video that felt genuinely cutting-edge on PS1. Chrono Trigger, a generation earlier on SNES, is prized instead for its remarkably tight pacing, multiple endings, and a battle system with almost no random encounters or padding — a design philosophy still cited as ahead of its time.

Collector Reality

Both games command real premiums on the secondhand market specifically because they're so frequently recommended as genre entry points, which keeps demand consistently high. FF7 is a multi-disc PS1 game, so verify all discs are included and tested; Chrono Trigger cartridges don't have that concern but do carry the usual SNES cartridge-condition checks.

Which to Play First

If you want the more modern, cinematic JRPG experience and don't mind a longer time commitment, start with FF7. If you want what many consider the tightest-paced, most replayable JRPG of the 16-bit era, start with Chrono Trigger. Neither is a wrong first purchase, and most serious JRPG collectors own both.
