Capture Cards in 2026: Do You Actually Need One?

Consoles have built-in capture, streaming services encode in the cloud, and a lot of people buy a capture card to solve a problem they don't have. Here's when you genuinely need one.

A capture card takes a video signal from one device and makes it available to another as a webcam-like input. That's it. The reason this trips people up is that a large share of what people want to do with one can be done without one.

The three specs that actually matter

Passthrough resolution and refresh rate

This is the one people get wrong. Passthrough is what you see on your display while the card records. If your console outputs 4K120 and your card only passes through 4K60, you've just downgraded your own gameplay to record it. Match passthrough to your display's capability first, and treat recording resolution as the secondary concern — 1080p60 recording with 4K120 passthrough is a perfectly sensible configuration.

Recording resolution vs what you'll actually publish

Most streaming platforms cap practical delivery well below 4K, and most viewers watch on phones. Recording at 1080p60 is entirely adequate for streaming and for most editing. Pay for 4K capture only if you're producing content where the finished product is genuinely 4K.

HDCP handling

Content protection on the source device will block capture of protected material. On consoles this can affect streaming apps and, occasionally, specific games or cutscenes. This is a normal, expected limitation rather than a fault with the card.

Capture and streaming gear

The card is one part of it. Audio quality is what actually separates watchable content from unwatchable, and a microphone upgrade beats a capture upgrade every time.

Buy the microphone first

If you're building a setup on a budget and choosing between a better capture card and a better microphone, buy the microphone. Viewers tolerate a compressed 1080p image and will not tolerate bad audio for thirty seconds. This is the most consistently ignored advice in streaming and the most reliably correct.

The verdict

DEPENDS, and the test takes one question: are you bringing console footage into a PC? If yes, buy one, and match the passthrough spec to your display before anything else. If no — you're PC-only, or you just want clips for social — you don't need one and the console already does the job.

If your budget only stretches to one upgrade, make it a microphone.
